UGH! Wal-Mart snapping up real estate?

Craig Sweitzer at Urban Works Real Estate reports Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is working to secure approximately 17 Portland area sites for its “Neighborhood Market" concept. The Bentonville, Ark.-based retail behemoth plans to open suburban and urban stores that will be approximately 40,000 square feet in size.

Sweitzer blogs that Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) will open its first store in a former Ashley Furniture store site at Northwest Cornell and 173rd Street in Beaverton.

Citing “local real estate sources,” the reliably accurate Sweitzer said Wal-Mart has leased and/or purchased at least 13 sites and is negotiating for additional close-in urban locations. Portland Business Journal Wendy Culverwell
